Quill: Worlds and Quests

Game: Quill: World and Quests
Solo Project
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Stage of Development: Electronic Proof of Concept (EPOC)

Hey! This page isn't completed yet, it contains drafts and placeholders
Please go back.

Quill is a tool made for creatives to create cities, towns and villages for their unique world. Its focus is:
  1. Create consistently fun and interesting locations by increasing the users' reference base
  2. Create content faster
  3. Keep the creative in creative control
Locations are primarily made from customisable questionnaires, filled to the bring with options derived from history, fiction, and supplemented with the player's own.
Flags, world regions and other content is created through 2D interfaces

Lessons Learned:
Systems/Methodologies:
  1. Unreal Widgets & Best Practices for interfaces
  2. Unreal Materials pipeline & material nodegraphs
  3. Application of Render Targets
  4. Creating a Saving/Loading system
    1. Generating a state from a save file
    2. Creating a configuration which can store any setup of questions
  5. Applying Json for data storage/sharing
  6. Advanced Blueprinting & Systems Design
    1. Reusable systems/features/events
    2. Breaking up large features into reusable components
    3. Maintaining readable blueprints
      1. Clear naming conventions
      2. Clean layouts

Special Features:
  1. Creating reusable components, functions & systems
    1. As opposed to single-use Mission Design
  2. Creating persistence between sessions through a UUID-like system of my own devising
One of the major challenges is to make the system as open as possible without losing consistency in what it offers.
The purpose is to allowing users to share their creations with friends, publish them online, and create resources so others can use your universe.

In future it may grow to include a generation tool but there are fantastic substitutes already available online.

While not a completed project for the foreseeable future, I want to share what I've learned from Quill, as it has been an incredible learning experience so far.
Quill remains in early development
I would be happy to give you a tour, should you want to know more.
